Exploring 99 Names Of Allah Almighty And Their Meanings

Allah Almighty has lots of beautiful names. Like other things, I can’t describe how beautiful His names are, because I’m just a tiny creature and He is the Creator. I’m not even given this ability. But I can assure you that every name of Allah Almighty has its own beauty and portrays Allah’s Majesty. Allah Almighty Himself commands us in the Holy Quran to call Him by His beautiful names. Here are a couple of verses from the Holy Quran:

  • “قُلِ ادْعُوا اللّٰهَ اَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمٰنَ ؕ اَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُوْا فَلَهُ الْاَسْمَآءُ الْحُسْنٰي” “Say, “Call (Him by the name of) Allah or Ar-RaHmān, in whichever way you call, His are the Best Names.”[¹]
  • وَلِلّٰهِ الْاَسْمَآءُ الْحُسْنٰي فَادْعُوْهُ بِهَا ۪ وَذَرُوا الَّذِيْنَ يُلْحِدُوْنَ فِيْۤ اَسْمَآئِهٖ” سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ ” “For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing.”[²]

There are lots of names of Allah Almighty in the Holy Quran and in the books of Hadith. Generally, we know Allah Almighty has 99 names, but it’s not true that Allah Almighty has more than 99 names. Now you can ask, “How many names does Allah Almighty have?” The simple answer is, “Allah Almighty knows best.”  But I can give you a Hadith on the importance of His 99 names.

  • Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise.” [³]

Now, which 99 names are these? There is a Hadith in Jami` at-Tirmidhi,[⁴] where we can see a list of 99 names of Allah Almighty. I will provide you with the list below. But remember, this Hadith is a weak Hadith. There is no such authentic Hadith about these 99 names.

Among these 99 names, there are some names which are called “Greatest Names” which we find in Hadith with special importance from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Some hadiths from there are mentioned here.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and a man was offering prayer. He then made supplication: O Allah, I ask You by virtue of the fact that praise is due to You, there is no deity but You, Who showest favour and beneficence, the Originator of the Heavens and the earth, O Lord of Majesty and Splendour, O Living One, O Eternal One. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said: He has supplicated Allah using His Greatest Name. When supplicated by this name, He answers, and when asked by this name, He gives.[⁵]
  • “عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏”‏ اسْمُ اللَّهِ الأَعْظَمُ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الآيَتَيْنِ ‏{‏ وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ ‏}‏ وَفَاتِحَةُ سُورَةِ آلِ عِمْرَانَ ‏{‏ الم * اللَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَىُّ الْقَيُّومُ ‏}‏ ‏.‏” ‘Asma daughter of Yazid reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: “Allah’s Greatest Name is in these two verses: “And your Ilaah (God) is One Ilaah (God), none has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving,” and the beginning of Surah Al ‘Imran, “A.L.M Allah, there is no deity but He, the Living, the Eternal.”[⁶]

These Hadiths teach us how to make supplications to the Almighty Allah. They also show us some significant names of Allah Almighty which we should remember and we should make supplications using these names. May Allah Almighty grant all of us good deeds and forgive all of our mistakes. Ameen.
