Abu Sa’id Khudri reported that some persons amongst the Companions of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) set out on a journey and they happened to pass by a tribe from the tribes of Arabia. They demanded hospitality from the members of that tribe, but they did not extend any hospitality to them. They said to them: Is there any incantator amongst you, at the chief of the tribe has bgen stung by a scorpion? A person amongst us said: ‘Yes. So he came to him and he practised incan- tation with the help of Sura al-Fatiha and the person became all right. He was given a flock of sheep (as recompense), but he refused to accept that, saying: I shall make a mention of it to Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ), and if he approves of it. then I shall accept it. So we came to Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) and made a mention of that to him and he (that person) said: Allah’s Messenger by Allah, I did not practice incantation but with the help of Sura al-Fatiha of the Holy Book. He (the Holy Prophet) smiled and said: How did you come to know that it can be used (as incactation)? – and then said: Take out of that and allocate a share for me along with your share. Sahih Muslim 2201a
Why Making Dua for a Sick Person is Important
Dua is more than a request; it’s an act of worship. When we pray for the sick, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah’s power and mercy. Here’s why it matters:
- Seeking Allah’s Help: Illness reminds us of human frailty and Allah’s omnipotence.
- Emotional Comfort: Dua offers peace to the patient and those around them.
- Following the Sunnah: The Prophet (PBUH) frequently made duas for the sick and encouraged others to do the same.
Hadith Reference:
- Thauban, the freed slave of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: الَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم “ مَنْ عَادَ مَرِيضًا لَمْ يَزَلْ فِي خُرْفَةِ الْجَنَّةِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ He who visits the sick continues to remain in the fruit garden of Paradise until he returns. (Sahih Muslim, 2568)
Etiquette (Adab) of Making Dua for the Sick
- Sincerity: Make your dua with full faith in Allah’s ability to heal.
- Timing: Duas are more likely to be accepted in the last third of the night or after prayers.
- Facing the Qibla: It’s recommended to face the Qibla while making dua.
- Use of Allah’s Names: Invoke Allah’s names, especially As-Shafi (The Healer).
Prophet Muhammad’s Guidance on Visiting and Praying for the Sick
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of visiting the sick and making dua for them:
- Hadith:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone visits a sick whose time (of death) has not come, and says with him seven times: I ask Allah, the Mighty, the Lord of the mighty Throne, to cure you, Allah will cure him from that disease. (Abu Dawood, 3106)
Conclusion
Praying for a sick person is a profound way to show love and compassion, while also seeking Allah’s mercy. These duas, rooted in the Quran and Sunnah, offer not just physical healing but emotional and spiritual solace. Remember, every heartfelt prayer is heard by Allah. Let’s strengthen our faith and support our loved ones through these beautiful supplications. As always I seek refuge in Allah Almighty from all kinds of harm and pray that He makes my work easy. I also pray that He considers this effort a means of salvation for us in this world and the hereafter. Whatever is good in my writing is entirely a blessing from Allah Almighty, and any faults are due to Satan (Devil) and my own lack of knowledge. JazakAllah. (Thank you).
