What is Istikhara Prayer and Dua?

Istikhara, derived from the Arabic root word “khayr” meaning goodness, is both a prayer and a dua that Muslims perform when seeking divine guidance. It’s essentially asking Allah to guide you towards what is best in a specific situation, whether it’s regarding marriage, a job opportunity, or any other significant decision. Unlike other prayers, Istikhara is a plea for direction, acknowledging our limited knowledge and placing our trust in the One who knows all. If you want a specific definition of Istikhara Prayer and Dua, you can use the one below.

Hadiths on Istikhara: Prophetic Wisdom on Seeking Guidance

This Dua is taken from a renowned Hadith from the Sahih al-Bukhari. And this is the Sunnah Dua of the Istikhara Prayer. The beauty of Istikhara lies in its foundation in the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet emphasized the importance of turning to Allah in all matters, big and small. Here’s the Hadith,

  • Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (Istikhara means to ask Allah to guide one to the right sort of action concerning any job or a deed), in all matters as he taught us the Suras of the Qur’an. He said, “If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two rak`at prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer): –(above mentioned Dua)..
(Then)The Prophet (ﷺ) added that then the person should name (mention) his need. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1166)

This hadith reminds us that seeking guidance from Allah should be an integral part of our decision-making process. So we should act upon this Hadith more and more for improving our spiritual journey towards Islam.

What is the best time to perform Istikhara Prayer?

There is no specific time for Istikhara, but it’s often recommended to perform it during the night, after Salat-ul-Isha or before Salat-ul-Fajr. These quiet hours are perfect for reflecting on your decision and seeking guidance when the mind is calm, and distractions are minimal.
However, Istikhara can be performed at any time of the day or night. The key is sincerity in seeking Allah’s guidance. Except the forbidden time. Which are:

  • Sunrise: Avoid performing Salat during the time when the sun’s rising appears until it has fully risen.
  • Zenith: Refrain from Salat when the sun is at its highest point (zenith) until it begins to decline.
  • Sunset: Do not perform Salat during the time when the sun begins its setting until it has fully disappeared.

Common Misconceptions About Istikhara

Despite its simplicity, there are some common misconceptions about Istikhara among some people that can lead to confusion:

  • You Must See a Dream: One of the most prevalent misconceptions is that Istikhara will always result in a dream that clearly indicates the right decision. While it’s true that some people may receive guidance through dreams, it’s not necessary. Istikhara can bring clarity through other means, such as a feeling of contentment or a series of events that lead you towards the right choice.
  • Istikhara is Only for Major Decisions: Another misconception is that Istikhara should only be performed for significant life decisions like marriage or career changes. In reality, Istikhara can be performed for any decision, big or small. It’s about seeking Allah’s blessings and guidance in all matters.
  • Istikhara is a One-Time Event: Some people believe that performing Istikhara once is sufficient to receive guidance. However, Istikhara can be repeated multiple times for a particular decision, especially if there is continued uncertainty or if circumstances change. It’s a tool that can be used throughout the decision-making process to seek Allah’s guidance at different stages.

What to Do After Performing Istikhara

After you’ve performed Istikhara, it’s essential to trust the process. Sometimes the guidance will come immediately, while other times it may take a while. Regardless of how long it takes, have faith that Allah is guiding you towards what is best. Be patient, and remember that Allah’s timing is always perfect. Because Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

  • “وَاسْتَعِيْنُوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلٰوةِ ؕ وَاِنَّهَا لَكَبِيْرَةٌ اِلَّا عَلَي الْخٰشِعِيْنَ ۙ” Seek help through patience and prayer. It is indeed exacting, but not for those who are humble in their hearts. (Al-Baqarah 2:45)

If you’re still unsure, you can perform Istikhara multiple times for the same decision. There’s no harm in repeating the prayer if you’re seeking more clarity.

My Final Thoughts:

Istikhara is more than just a one-time prayer for specific decisions; it’s a lifelong practice that strengthens our relationship with Allah and reminds us of His ever-present guidance. By incorporating Istikhara into your life, you’re not only seeking answers but also nurturing your faith and trust in Allah’s plan.

So, the next time you find yourself facing a tough decision, take a moment to perform Istikhara. Remember, it’s about placing your trust in Allah and letting go of your worries, knowing that He will guide you to what is best.
