Being a Muslim is such a blessing from Allah Almighty. I personally feel so blessed for this reason, and I think every true Muslim feels the same. I also think that for us, one of the most blessed things is our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Because Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran,
- “وَمَاۤ اَرْسَلْنٰكَ اِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعٰلَمِيْنَ” “And We have not sent you but as mercy for all the worlds.” [¹]
I’m a very ordinary man and I don’t have the ability to manifest his blessings in my writing, explaining how blessed we are to have Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a guide for every aspect of our life. Today, I will write about only some of his names. Because there is a Hadith where he told us to keep names based on his name, not his surname.
Here is the Hadith:
- Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: “Call yourselves by my name, but do not use my KUNYAH (surname).” [²]
There is another Hadith where he himself mentions his five names:
- Narrated by Jubair bin Mut`im, “I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, ‘I have several names: I am Muhammad and I am Ahmad, and I am Al-Mahi with whom Allah obliterates Kufr (disbelief), and I am Al-Hashir (gatherer) at whose feet (i.e., behind whom) the people will be gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), and I am Al-Aqib (i.e., who succeeds the other prophets in bringing about good).” [³]
Do you know how many names Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has? The answer varies among scholars of Islam. Some say it’s more than 200, while others say more than 1000. It actually varies. I will provide you with a list of more than 230 names.
Please note: At first glance, you may think that some of his names are similar to the names of Allah Almighty. But if you really notice the meanings of these names, it will make sense to you.
Please remember, this list includes his names and surnames. So be careful while choosing a name, because we should keep names based on his name, not his surname. Jazakallah (Thank you).
